Michael J. Grant



Michael Grant has extensive litigation experience representing a diverse group of clients, including large corporations, small businesses, governmental entities, and individuals, at the trial and appellate level in state and federal courts.

Mr. Grant has represented plaintiffs and defendants in cases involving insurance broker liability, breach of commercial contracts, corporate insurance recovery, franchisor-franchisee disputes, misappropriation of trade secrets, enforcement and defense of restrictive covenants, corporate breach of fiduciary duties, partnership disputes, shareholder disputes, landlord-tenant disputes, employee compensation disputes, accounting fraud and malpractice actions.

Representative Experience

Mr. Grant’s professional accomplishments include:

  • Obtained injunctive and other equitable relief on behalf of several, closely held Illinois corporations against former employees for violation of restrictive covenants in employment agreements and for violation of the Illinois Trade Secrets Act;
  • Won judgment in favor of an investment advisor firm in an action brought by an insurer involving the insurer’s defense and indemnity obligations under a professional liability insurance policy;
  • Successfully defended a national accounting firm against claims for common law fraud, as well as violation of federal and state securities laws and the Illinois Consumer Fraud Act in which the plaintiff alleged approximately $2 million in damages;
  • Won judgment in favor of financial institution against borrowers in a complex financial transaction;
  • Successfully represented a corporation in litigation over insurance coverage under a directors and officers and private company liability policy;
  • Successfully represented a  principal in a closely held corporation, including the grant of a petition for rehearing before the Illinois Appellate Court;
  • Successfully represented a Fortune 500 company in several breach of contract actions against the company’s franchisees;
  • Currently represents a large insurance brokerage firm in defense of claims for professional negligence and breach of fiduciary duty; and
  • Currently represents a minority owner and executive officer in a dispute among shareholders of closely held corporation after majority owners attempted to terminate minority owner without compensation.

Education, Professional Activities, and Recognition

In 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015, Mr. Grant was named an Illinois “Rising Star” by his peers in SuperLawyers® Magazine, a distinction reserved for the top 2.5% of Illinois lawyers who are under 40 years old.

Before joining Tabet DiVito & Rothstein LLC  in September 2002, Mr. Grant was the law clerk to the Honorable Stephen A. Schiller in the Chancery Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois.

Mr. Grant graduated with honors from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2001.  He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Dayton in 1997.

Mr. Grant is licensed in Illinois and a member of the Trial Bar of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.  He is also a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and American Bar Association.
